George Washington sollte sich nach einem Regierungssitz am Potomac River umsehen. Er wählte ein Gebiet das Maryland und Virginia umschloss. Washington ist also eine Planhauptstadt. Der Bau der Stadt begann 1792. Pierre Charles L’Enfant sollte die Stadt gestalten. Am 11. Juni 1800 wurde Washington (D. C.) ständige Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Staaten. 1814 wurde die Stadt von den Briten erobert, dabei wurde das Kapitol zerstört und das Weiße Haus beschädigt.
